Jackson County baby receives liver transplant

Madison Mitchell Madison Mitchell

ALTUS_ An eight-month-old Jackson County girl is recovering from an emergency liver transplant. Doctors diagnosed Madison Mitchell with a rare disease when she was only eight weeks old. It caused her liver to fail and jaundice turned her skin yellow. After months of waiting for a liver donor, her parents got a call Friday morning from doctors in Missouri. They flew to St. Louis where Madison underwent a successful surgery.

On Sunday, her family and friends held a benefit dinner and auction to help with medical expenses. When organizers first came up with the idea a few weeks ago, they had no idea that Madison would have gotten a new liver. They expected her to still be waiting.

Madison was at the top of the recipient list in St. Louis and they got a call at 1:30 in the morning Friday saying they had a liver for her. Unfortunately, it came from a deceased infant whose parents donated the liver.

Madison will stay at the St. Louis Children's hospital for 3 to 6 months. The benefit raised $8,500 dollars to help her family.
