Lawton_A two-car crash in East Lawton flipped an elderly driver's pickup and sent her to the hospital by helicopter. The other driver - a high school student - was not injured.
The crash happened on East Gore Boulevard near Sonic and the Fort Sill Apache Casino. The cars collided when the pickup driver made a U-turn into the westbound lane - straight into the path of the student's car.
Witnesses say that they were getting a snack at the Sonic after school when a fellow student crashed into the silver pickup making the U-turn. Officials have yet to determine how fast the juvenile driver was travelling, but witnesses said it looked like it was well above the 45-mile-per-hour speed limit when it hit the truck.
Workers and customers rushed to the scene, and said there was some coming from the vehicle. The crash trapped the 68-year-old woman inside, and a dozen responders worked to free her so that she could be evacuated by helicopter to a hospital. Workers at area businesses say that they often see drivers speeding - especially after school lets out, the same time as Wednesday's wreck.
The place where the pickup turned over does not have a "No U-Turn" sign, and officials say they have not yet determined who was at fault. The police department has a team of reconstructionists piecing together the specifics of what happened. Investigator Master Officer Scott Keisner says that it will not be a fast process.
