Oklahoma Dam Inspections

A published report finds some dams, similar to the ones at Lakes Lawtonka and Elsworth, do not have a state required emergency plan.

The plans are supposed to outline possible dangers and steps to protect residents in case of a breach.

The report also states dozens of dams have not been inspected within the state-mandated one-year period.

However, most of Oklahoma's dams are considered "low hazard" and would cause no deaths and little economic problems if they failed.

More than 400 Oklahoma dams were built before 1950.

By the way, there is an emergency evacuation plan in effect, for Lake Lawtonka's dam.
