Lawton_Press Release_The Lawton Public Schools will conduct a workshop for school bus drivers. The workshop, which is approved by the Oklahoma State Board of Education and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, will be held at the LPS Transportation Center, 1101 S. 17th St. in Lawton.
Classes will be in session from 5-10 p.m. (Monday-Friday). The lead instructor will give individual driving tests by appointment beginning Saturday, Feb. 14. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements. No other over-the-road driving tests will be required.
Although the class is primarily for drivers seeking employment as LPS bus drivers, enrollment is also open to surrounding school districts.
Beginning drivers must have a learner's permit issued by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety prior to Feb. 10. An applicant must pass five written tests - covering general knowledge, pre-trip procedures, passengers, the school bus and air brakes - in order to obtain his or her learner's permit.
The air brake test is required only for school districts that have buses that use air brakes.
An Oklahoma Commercial Driver's Manual can be obtained from any troop headquarters of the Department of Public Safety, or at the LPS Transportation Center. LPS officials will also supply the Oklahoma School Bus Driver's Manual and other related materials during the workshop.
The registration fee for non-LPS employees is $65. Payment is due no later than the Tuesday, Feb. 10, class.
