Snow days bill clears hurdle

Oklahoma City_A bill that supporters say will provide more instruction time for students and give schools more flexibility in making up snow days has passed its first hurdle.

The bill changes the current requirement of 180 six-hour school days to 1,080 hours of instruction per school year.  It was approved Monday morning by a House Subcommittee on a 13-1 vote and now goes to the full house appropriations committee for consideration.

Rep. Jeff Hickman says schools could make up missed days by simply extending the school day by an hour a day until the lost instructional time is recovered.
