Red River Career Expo on Thursday

Lawton_The Stock Market is down, and the unemployment rate is up, but a lot of companies still are hiring and will be looking for new talent on Thursday.  Many of those companies will be at the 12th Annual Red River Career Expo at Cameron University (CU).  It's a joint venture between Cameron and the Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP).  It isn't only for students and military personnel - it's for everyone, and it's FREE.

The Cameron Fitness Center has filled its basketball courts with empty booths that will house almost 100 different potential employers.  "The health care industry, engineering, business, finance, nursing - almost anything you can think of there's going to be a recruiter here tomorrow," said CU Director of Student Development Jennifer Pruchnicki. 

The expo is for all residents of Southwest Oklahoma, including soldiers.  "We work with soldiers that are retiring, and then soldiers who just have served their four or eight years," said ACAP Manager Debra Watts.  "It's just helping them find another career once they leave the Army."

Government agencies such as the FBI and Border Patrol will be at the expo, and may be a perfect fit for a former soldier.  "Many time our military personnel - once the leave their uniform and get out of the military - they still want to work for the government as a civilian," said Watts. 

Some recruiters may give on-the-spot interviews, so Pruchnicki advises to dress your best.  "Leave your sweats, leave your ball cap at home," she said.  "Come dressed professionally, bring copies of your resume, bring a good attitude, be prepared to network because you never know, by coming to this career fair, you could be leaving with your dream job."
