Welfare drug tests

The Oklahoma Senate has unanimously approved a bill requiring applicants for welfare benefits to undergo substance abuse testing.

Senator Randy Brogdon, an Owasso Republican, said the goal of his bill is to strengthen families by getting those addicted to drugs and alcohol into treatment.

Applicants for benefits under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program would be referred treatment if they test positive for substance abuse.

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
