Tipton HS football coach nominated for national award

TIPTON, OK (KSWO) - A southwest Oklahoma football coach is competing for a $50,000 prize to help his team.

Tipton High School Head Coach Travis White is nominated for the U.S. Cellular Most Valuable Coach contest -- and he’s made it to the top 50. White has been coaching for 10 years and says his football team is in need of helmets and new equipment. He says it’s important not for him to win the title, but to be able to give to his team.

“I view them as sons and I try to do that," said White. "You spend so much time with them that you’re going to get very close to them and you try to help them through difficult times. And the flip side is they can help me and the rest of the coaches through difficult times. So, it really is, any football team, any coach will tell you, a good football team is a family.”

The top 15 coaches will win $5,000 for their school and the winner will receive $50,000. If you’d like to submit a vote for White, you can do that right here. Voting closes October 8th.
