UPDATE: Dog beaten on camera in Lawton undergoes surgery

LAWTON, OK (RNN Texoma) - We have an update on the condition of a six month old Dachsund, who was beaten by a child Monday evening in Lawton. Sprocket’s owner says the puppy had surgery on one leg today and another leg will be repaired either Friday or Monday. Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City is covering 100% of the surgery costs.

“One pretty kind of amazing opportunity that Dr. Neel gives us is to do some pretty nice pro-bono work from time to time so we’ll be able to help the family out and cover these costs, and make it right for the family," said Wayne Sisk, a veterinarian with Neel Veterinary Hospital.

The four-pound pup was beaten by a boy in the 500 block of Jefferson Monday evening. Sprocket’s owner, David Winbush’s cameras caught the entire incident. The boy is seen punching the puppy, throwing him in the air and at one point, walking through the yard with a baseball bat. Sprocket was found bleeding from his nose around midnight underneath a piece of concrete. He suffered two broken legs, but doctors at Neel Veterinary Clinic said he’s in good spirits.

“Dr. Hicks will get the bones re-aligned and put some metal hardware in there so we can get a good, long term fix so the little guy will have long term stability and will be a puppy again,” Sisk said.

Sprocket’s GoFundMe Page has received an outpouring of love. Thousands of dollars have been raised and that number is growing. Although the vet hospital is covering surgery costs, Winbush says he will give them a generous donation. He says another part will go to Freeman Vet Clinic in Lawton. Sprockett will be in Oklahoma City up to four days but Sisk says he will make a full recovery with no long term problems.

Winbush is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support. He said he wanted to thank everyone for every single thing they’ve done for Sprocket and his family.

No citations have been issued, but Lawton Animal Welfare and Lawton Police continue to investigate.
