LAWTON, OK (TNN) - New details are coming to light following a fatal shooting at 17th and Douglas. Lawton Police say the incident was not a drive-by. Instead, police say the victim, Tyron Johnson, was gunned down in front of the home.
Raepheal Hands has lived next door to the home where the shooting happened since 1979. He says he wasn't home at the time of the shooting, but his mother was.
“She had heard what happened and told me, so I hurried over to see what was going on,” said Hands. “They had it taped off, so I couldn’t get here. I had to go somewhere else and come back the next day. I had no clue what happened.”
Sgt. Timothy Jenkins says they get calls in the area from time to time, as they do across the city, everything from domestic, burglary, and now the latest, a fatal shooting. Hands says he's never felt unsafe in the neighborhood. But there is still cause to be concerned.
"It’s scary because it’s close,” Hands said. “It’s an issue over there and not over here. But when something like that happens, you have to be concerned because you’re so close to it.”
Sgt. Jenkins says they are in the process of talking with witnesses and processing evidence. He encourages anyone with information to come forward.
“If you see something like this, let us know,” said Sgt. Jenkins. “This could be a loved one of yours or someone else’s. We want you to take that time to say, ‘Hey, think about it. If that’s someone that I know, or my loved one, what would I do?’”
