LAWTON, OK (TNN) - Thursday night the sound of blues and jazz filled City Hall in Lawton’s 9th Annual Soulful Story.
The event featured live music and a warm meal. Attendees were able to learn about the long, rich history of Jazz and Blues in a music-filled lecture.
The discussion covered the genre’s earliest roots in slavery through to its modern day incarnations and how the music has impacted society in Oklahoma and beyond.
“There is jazz and blues here, and also know the history of what’s going on in this city, because, believe it or not, a lok of folks here in Lawton don’t even know that they have a mecca of jazz here, and blues here -- you have artists here and everything else," said Richard “Jazzman” Bridgeforth, president and executive director of the West Coast Jazz Society.
Event organizers are hoping to bring a new wave of jazz music to the city, with a special jazz show planned for April.
