LAWTON, OK (TNN) - A Lawton woman, who’s dedicated the past 20 years of her life to helping at-risk children, was recognized Wednesday for her service.
Dorothy Cousins is a foster grandparent at Crossroads Head Start.
She's been there since 1999.
Co-workers say Dorothy does everything from helping children with their homework and special projects to teaching them to tie their shoes. And she does it all with love and a smile.
Wednesday, she was honored in a surprise reception on her work break.
“Oh it feels so good. It feels really good and I appreciate it and I love working here with the kids and I love the workers," said Cousins. "They’re just my grandkids. I call them grandkids.”
“Dorothy is just one-of-a-kind. She’s just special and we’re thrilled that she has dedicated this much of her life. As a senior, and giving back that much is pretty remarkable," said Tina Casey, Program Director of the Delta Foster Grandparent Program.
Dorothy will celebrate her 81st birthday on Saturday, but does not plan on slowing down. She says will continue to volunteer as long as she can
