LAWTON, OK (TNN) - You may have heard the saying, “when you look good, you feel good.” Well, that is exactly what New Directions is trying to achieve for their clients through their first-ever makeup drive.
New Directions usually receives donations of general hygiene products, but very rarely any beauty items.
“A lot of people don’t think about makeup. It’s like, why not makeup?” said Katina Perkins, sexual assault program coordinator for New Directions. “Sometimes people come in here with literally nothing on their back, and they have all these bruises and want to get covered up, and so why not? They need makeup. I like makeup, so I just felt these ladies may want some eyeliner. They may want some mascara. There’s been times when they’ve asked for this type of stuff, and we don’t have it.”
The shelter has placed donation boxes at four locations around Lawton: True Beauty Supply, Native Roots Salon, AJ’s Hair Pizazz, and Salons de Beaute’. They are looking for all types of makeup, hair products, and perfumes.
“Mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, lipstick, all shades of foundation, powder," said Perkins. "Any beauty products to make a woman feel good, smell good, look good, because they’re going on interviews, and everybody wants to feel good and look good about themselves.”
The drive will run for the next thirty days, and ends on April 18th. Clients will then be given the products and a makeup tutorial.
New Directions also has other events planned in April, which is sexual assault awareness month. Events include an awareness event at Viridian Coffee and a Zumba class at Cameron University.
