LAWTON, OK (TNN) -A workout class for seniors and those overcoming disabilities is being offered in Lawton at the Patterson Community Center four days a week.
It is a low impact, low intensity workout primarily done in a chair. It is similar to chair aerobics.
“This is going to help me stay independent and healthy longer. It improves the quality of my life," said Sandra James.
Exercise by Design by Rhonda is taught Monday through Thursday at 9 a.m. for one hour. It has been offered at the Patterson Center for about two months.
Sandra James makes it out to the class everyday and said she has seen an improvement in herself. She said if you don’t use it, you lose it.
“I find myself stronger, I have more strength, I have more energy. I’m able to do things that I never thought I would ever do again and I feel better. Now I’ll tell you believe it or not, I enjoy the pain because when I’m finished and my body’s hurting, it’s because I’ve used that muscle that’s just been sitting there. That’s not healthy, that’s not good," said James.
Activities Coordinator, Yolanda Allen said she and Rhonda thought it was important to bring workout classes to the Patterson Center and with their background in exercise and instructing it was easy to do.
“We try to build friendships, we try to build a community, we try to build a place where they can come in and feel safe and just workout and have fun, just try to bring life back into them," said Allen.
This workout exercises different areas of the body from abs, to upper and lower body. She encourages everyone to work at their own pace.
“So they’re able to move just a little bit, so one thing we want to teach them is movement. Some of them have had knee replacements where they need to get up and move round and just do the full range of motion with their knees," said Allen.
James said she enjoys coming in everyday and motivating one another.
“The favorite part is not only the exercise, but we have a great group of people, so it’s the socialization aspect that’s really important also so we cheer each other on, we encourage each other," said James.
They also offer a Tabata class which is a high intensity workout. That’s offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.
