LAWTON, OK (TNN) -The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is kicking off its 6th annual Adopt-A-Child Campaign this week with a Chili Dinner.
Proceeds from the Adopt-A-Child Campaign allows a child to come to The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club for one year at the cost of $300.
This was started to help families who can’t afford the fees of the club. Director of the Boys and Girls Club, Christal Durham said having a place for kids to come is beneficial to parents.
“I think providing a safe fun environment for the kids after school and during the summer is an important point for parents, that they know their kids will be take care of and entertained and learning, growing as they’re in the building," said Durham.
Not only does the program help the parents, but Durham says it often leaves a lasting impression on those who attend.
“I think seeing the kids grow and learn and graduate from school and some of them come back from college to see me, and tell me their experiences is just a wonderful opportunity,” said Durham.
Last year, they met their goal of $20,000. Durham said this year they want to raise $35,000 because they plan on serving more kids throughout the year. She said kids will be available to show the community around the day of the chili dinner.
“You’re just welcomed to come in and tour the building, and take a look to see what the kids are doing that day, their activities, their artwork, their computer lab work, homework. We just want to open the building up to the community so they can see what we’re doing," said Durham.
The Adopt-A-Child Campaign will kick off April 2nd Chili Dinner and is from 5-8 p.m. at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls CLub. Cost is $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
