Lawton Animal Welfare receives thank you gift from inmate

LAWTON, OK (TNN) - Lawton Animal Welfare recently received a thank you gift from a GEO prison inmate.

“Mr. Russell, sir just giving you my love and support to the animals. I see everything you guys do on the local news. You and your workers are doing a great job at the shelter. Please keep up the good work. God Bless to you and everyone at the shelter," letter from Eric.

This is the letter that was written by Eric, an inmate at the Lawton Correctional Facility. Along with it was a small, handmade sculpture of a dog.

“The initial reaction that I got was oh my gosh what is this, and you know I didn’t even look at the box. It was addressed to me, so I just pulled it out and I was like wow this is kind of amazing, and I read the letter that was attached to it thanking us for what we’re doing for the animals out here, and that’s when I really was like oh my gosh, this is something special," said Superintendent of Lawton Animal Welfare Russell Anderson.

Anderson said they are working to find a display case so that visitors can see it too. He said he’s thankful for the support.

“For someone to reach out, Eric to reach out and say hey thank you for doing this by the only means he had. He had mud, he had his hands, and he had some paint, I think that’s incredible," said Anderson.

He said Lawton Animal Welfare plans on sending a thank you letter to Eric and hopes he will stop by when he is released.

Eric did not leave behind a name for the dog and Anderson is asking for the community’s help on picking one out. You can send him your ideas on Lawton Animal Welfare’s Facebook page.
