ALTUS, Okla. (TNN) - A contract worker died Tuesday after falling from a cotton gin at the Cotton Growers CO-OP in Altus.

Jackson County Undersheriff Stacy Randolph identified the man as Jose Hernandez. He said Hernandez was not from the Altus area and was at the CO-OP doing contract work.

The accident happened on Tuesday morning as crews were preparing to clean the gin. Hernandez reportedly fell about 30 feet.

“They were cleaning up, started getting the lint and debris off the roof, and the subject fell through a skylight. A skylight that’s not metal, it’s made out of fiber material that lets light through the Gin. It was our understanding that one of his other worked said to not stand there, but it was too late," said Undersheriff Stacy Randolph.

The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s office was also called to the scene after the death.

We will continue to bring you updates as more information is released.

This story was updated to correct the Undersheriff’s name from Rudolph to Randolph.
