Massive fire burns thousands of acres in Kiowa County

KIOWA COUNTY, Okla. (KSWO) - A massive fire has rekindled in Kiowa County after burning overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

According to the Indiahoma Fire Department, it started near the intersection of U.S. 62 and Highway 54 before burning 12 to 13 miles north.

Early estimates are that around 4,000 acres were burned.

The fire caused multiple road closures and power outages in the surrounding areas.

Officials with Kiowa County Emergency management said they were just released from the scene of the fire Monday afternoon.

There have already been reports that two homes were lost and a bridge collapsed during the blaze.

So far, there are no reports of injuries, but it’s not clear how many animals may have been lost in the fire.

Approximately 20 departments were called out to battle the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
