LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - The Oklahoma Primary Elections took place June 16, showcasing which candidates voters across the Sooner State want to represent them at all levels of governance.

Once the dust settled after the polls closed at 7 p.m., several surprises emerged — including one in the Republican Primary for State Senate District 32, which covers Elgin and parts of Lawton.

In that race, incumbent Dusty Deevers came in last out of three GOP candidates, meaning he will not advance to the August runoff. Either Curtis Erwin or Jean Hausheer will go on to represent the Republican Party in November against Democrat Booker T. Newton.

Another surprise came in the GOP Gubernatorial Primary.

While three of the top four polling candidates heading into election night held their positions among the top vote-getters, one dropped to fifth place — leapfrogged by Jake Merrick, who gained momentum through social media during the campaign.

By the end of the night, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond was the top vote-getter, while Trump-endorsed Mike Mazzei picked up the second spot — setting up a Drummond-Mazzei runoff for the GOP nomination in August.

Chip Keating came in third at 18.5%, while Merrick jumped to fourth with 14.5% of the vote. Charles McCall, who had been among the top polling candidates heading into election night, rounded out the top five with 11.8% of the vote.
