Fort Sill hosts Army Concert Tour
LAWTON, Okla. - Army Entertainment and Fort Sill Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation present the 2009 Army Concert Tour sponsored by I. A.M. Strong. This year's Independence Day concert will be on Friday, July 3 at the Fort Sill Polo Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.
Country superstar Tim McGraw will headline the concert with opening acts Carter's Chord and the Eli Young Band.
"For this concert, we will shuttle attendees from different parking areas on post to the venue," said Marion Doss, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation special events coordinator. "All general admission parking for off-post concert attendees will be routed to one of the areas for shuttle service to the site."
The concert is on the Fort Sill Polo Field and attendees will get to the Polo Field via shuttle buses. Public parking is across the street from the Fort Sill Federal Credit Union on Thomas Ro. Shuttles will run beginning at 3 p.m. and take concertgoers from public parking to the Polo Field.
General admission parking will begin in the parking lots across Thomas Rd. from the Fort Sill Credit Union. The overflow from that parking area will be directed to Building 4700 on Mow-Way Rd.
"The shuttle buses will make a continuous loop from 3 p.m. through the end of the event. All volunteers and vendors are asked to stay on the field until all pedestrian traffic has cleared Gruber Road," said Doss.
All parking near the field, including the two parking lots on the field, in front of Little House on the Prairie and next to the Polo Club, will be for handicapped and site support parking. VIP parking will be across Sheridan Rd. at the museum.
After noon on July 3, Key Gate will be closed to all traffic to minimize traffic for pedestrians crossing Sheridan Rd. The only gates that will be points of entry onto Fort Sill will be Fort Sill Blvd., Sheridan Rd and Apache Gate. Taxicab service will be available at the designated parking areas after the concert.
"We want our Soldiers, families, and concert attendees to have a safe, enjoyable concert. Bottom line, if someone needs a ride home, they should not hesitate to ask an MWR representative for assistance," said Brenda Spencer-Ragland, director of MWR. "We are proud of the incredible support we get from our local sponsors and supporting agencies, we produce a great show because of the great team work."
Tickets cost $30 in advance and can be purchased at Lawton/Fort Sill Adventure Travel locations, area O'Reilly Auto Parts stores or on-line at http://www.sillmwr.com. Tickets are $35 at the gate. Children 6 and under are free.
All attendees entering post should enter through Sheridan Rd., Fort Sill Blvd., or Apache Gate Road. Extra security personnel will be posted at the parking areas and the venue to expedite traffic to the concert parking area. All concert attendees 18 and older must present a state, U.S. government issued picture ID, or passport if they have no ID.
"We want everyone to have a safe and fun time at the concert," said Doss. "We ask that those attending the concert make sure they follow the guidelines at the venue. Please do not bring cameras or recording devices into the venue. Other items not allowed in the venue include weapons, backpacks (with the exception of those with medical or baby products), coolers, or similar containers."
"Refreshments, including beverages, chicken, barbecue, pizza, and snow cones, will be available through the concert concessions at the site. Bags, backpacks, folding chairs, and baby bags will be checked by MPs at event entry points," said Doss. "An outside holding area will be open from 2 to 5:15 p.m. and beer will be served there after 4 p.m. No outside beverage cans will be allowed."
