OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP)_ Lt. Gov. Jari Askins is among three nominees recommended by the state's Judicial Nominating Commission for a vacant seat on the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
Tammy Reaves of the Administrative Office of the Courts says Askins, Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals Judge John Fisher and Oklahoma County District Judge Noma Gurich were recommended Tuesday from among 14 finalists.
Reaves says the recommendations were delivered Tuesday evening to Gov. Brad Henry's office. Henry, a term-limited Democrat, must fill the vacancy by Jan. 10, when he leaves office. If no appointment is made, the task will fall to Gov.-Elect Mary Fallin, a Republican. Askins, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for governor.
The recommendations were made despite legal challenges filed to delay the process.
The new justice will replace Marian Opala, who died Oct. 11.
