Elgin school bond fails again; New mayor in Altus

Undated_Elgin voters again rejected a school bond.  While the 'yes 'votes came in higher at 442 to 356, this proposal needed 60% approval to pass and it only received a little more than 55%.

The $13-million proposal would have built a new middle school, funded by an increase in ad valorem tax.

This issue was a scaled-back version of a school bond issue voters rejected in December.

In Altus, voters elected a new mayor. Former city councilman David Webb won the position in a close race with 1,391 votes to current councilman Jack Smiley's 1,370 votes.

Arvella Wall was also in the race and received 444 votes.

Tim Murphy will take over for Mike Patterson as the next police chief in Altus.  He won the three-man race with 1,438 votes.  Bob Carder had a couple hundred votes fewer than that, with 1,216.

Mike Munn received 539.
