Mother of teen who drowned speaks about her loss

CADDO COUNTY, Okla._Two Chickasha teenagers who drowned in a water hole in Cyril were found Saturday morning and now the mother of one of the teens is speaking about the loss of her son.

"I'm still in shock, really. It's unbelievable. I just saw him right before I went to work. It's just hard," Lawana Edwards, mother of 17-year-old Dontavis Ware.

Ware and his friend, 18-year-old Denton Walker, were at an abandoned rock quarry swimming Friday night when, according to an OHP report, both became exhausted and drowned.

"The story that I was hearing, I was just like, no way. He's too good of a swimmer. That is not how you're telling me I'm losing my son," Edwards said.

There were at least six teenagers swimming at the quarry that night and, according to some of the others there, Ware tried to save his friend.

"It was my son that jumped in and saved the other little boy, and they just couldn't hang on. He would help anybody at any cost. That's just how he is, very loving," Edwards said.

The quarry is on private property and officials say this is the only drowning to happen there.

A fund to help with burial cost for Dontavis has been set up at Focus Federal Credit Union.
