LAWTON, Okla._Two neighborhoods on Lawton's east side will be treated for mosquitoes Friday evening.
Between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., city workers will be fogging Turtle Creek and Garden Village, which were heavily impacted by the May floods and have seen drastic increases in the mosquito population. Jose Ramirez of the Stormwater and Drainage Division says the chemical they are using is aimed to kill adult mosquitoes, and is a preventative measure for diseases.
"Other than being a nuisance we want to try to avoid, we haven't had any signs of any diseases here in the city like they have in other counties. We just want to do it as a prevention in keeping them away," said Ramirez.
Ramirez assured the chemicals used Friday are safe, but said homeowners in those areas have been contacted via flyer and asked that they take some precautions like closing doors and windows, turning off air conditioners and removing clothes and children's toys from outdoors.
