FORT SILL, Okla._While Women's Equality Day is not until August 26, individuals at Fort Sill chose to celebrate it Thursday by having a luncheon with a special guest speaker.

First Assistant District Attorney in Comanche County Irma Newburn was the guest of honor at the luncheon celebrating women's right to vote and the 19th Amendment. Newburn says the day is about celebrating women of the past who worked to make a better future for all women who are living today.

"I feel like my accomplishments are a direct result of women having a voice in their democracy and having the right to vote. It opened doors for us and when opportunity knocks, you have to walk through that door," Newburn said.

Newburn stressed that women are making great strides in society, but still don't have quite the same opportunity as their male counterparts. She offered advice to all women in society, telling them to continue to work hard and take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way.
