Altus man dies from accidental shooting

ALTUS, OK (KSWO) –Altus police say a man died in an accidental shooting Friday afternoon.

Police were called to a home on the 1200 block of West Wingfield at 12:38 p.m. Friday and found a 62-year-old man under the home's carport. The man was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe the man was trying to secure the family dog to a chain when the gun he had fell and discharged. He was shot in the upper right thigh.

Family at the home told police the heard the gunshot, went outside and found the man lying on the ground.

Foul play is not suspected at this time. His body was taken to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
