LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -The interim chairman for the Comanche Nation said Tuesday she remains undecided if she'll put herself into the running for the position.
Vice Chairperson Susan Cothren is currently in charge, following former chairman Wallace Coffey's retirement on Friday. The tribal constitution's line of succession rules moved her into the chairman's role until a new one can be elected.
She says while she's serving in the interim role, she hopes to set a precedent for future Comanche leaders.
"I wouldn't be standing here right now if it wasn't for the support of the Comanche people that do have faith in me, and it just is heartwarming to me that they do have this confidence in me," said Cothren. "It's very important to me to uphold myself to a higher standard because of the confidence and the faith that the people have put in me."
Nominations for chairman will be put forth at the next general council meeting in April, and the election will be held in May. Cothren would not say at this time if she will decide to pursue a nomination.
