Lawton man charged for nursing home assault

LAWTON, Ok (RNN Texoma) - A Lawton man is under arrest after an assault with a pair of scissors in a Lawton nursing home.

26-year-old Richard Sheridan went into the Cedar Crest Manor on Fort Sill Boulevard Monday night to visit a resident. A caretaker saw Sheridan pressing a pair of scissors into the resident's throat. The caretaker asked Sheridan what he was doing and Sheridan attempted to leave the facility.

He tried to go through a locked door, which caused the alarm to go off. The caretaker then tried to disable the alarm and unlock the door so Sheridan would leave. Sheridan attempted to stab the caretaker with the scissors before running out the now unlocked door.

Police responded to the facility and the caretaker told police Sheridan ran towards Highland Cemetery. Officers found Sheridan at the cemetery and arrested him.

Sheridan has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. The court has ordered a mental health evaluation to determine if Sheridan is mentally competent to stand trial. He is expected to appear in court in August.
