DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) -Duncan Public Schools is improving its method of communicating by implementing a new system that will alert parents and students about important information quickly.
The district is switching from School Way to Blackboard which will allow them to send out notifications and announcements to parents and students.
Before getting the new system, the district had to use an app along with multiple platforms to send messages out.
With Blackboard, school leaders can now send out one alert that will notify parents through text message, phone call, emails, the district's website and social media all at once.
Superintendent Melonie Hau said they are always looking for ways to improve communication.
"It's incredibly important for schools to communicate quickly and in a timely manner to parents. They want to be involved in their child's education and we want them involved. It takes all of us to educate students, communication is critical and the tools that we use have to be effective in order for us to have trust in the work that we do for kids," said Hau.
With Blackboard, parents will be able to access student grades, attendance, lunch menus, security alerts, closures and bad weather procedures through DuncanPS.org.
"It will be a smoother way, quicker way of communicating to parents," said Hau.
Hau said the district learned about Black Board from Oklahoma City and Norman school districts.
"We noticed that other school sites were brighter, they were user friendly and that's something we want to provide for our community and for our parents. As we were looking at other platforms this one rose to the top," said Hau.
The district is already working on the new Blackboard system and it will be up and running by this Fall. If you have any questions you can visit or call the administration office.
