Hungry Hearts settles into new location

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - A new location for Hungry Hearts of Lawton, and new ways to help those who need a meal. Now, every Tuesday and Thursday the organization serves a free lunch from First Christian Church in Lawton.

Hungry Hearts director Adriene Davis says many things were on her wish list, but this central Lawton location was key. A stream of people was coming in and out of the side door where their kitchens and dining area are, which is exactly what Davis wants to see.

Davis used every part of the First Christian Church kitchen on the first day. It's something she hasn't had to work with in 8 months of serving the community at the American Legion in Lawton.

"They did not have a kitchen so it was simply hard for me to continue to cook everything at home and get everything prepared and relocate it to that facility so," Davis said. "They were gracious enough to open up their doors. We really appreciated it."

But she talks about the perks of working out of First Christian Church.

"Right here right now we have a full kitchen," Davis said. "Everything that we really needed or looking for in the beginning. So we are really grateful for first Christian church as well. And a lot know where this place is at because the come here and they eat on Wednesday and they serve breakfast on Sunday's so it worked out all the way around"

But Davis didn't seek out help - help found her.

"How it happened was we have heard about the incredible things Hungry Hearts was doing for the community and in the community," First Christian Church pastor Brandon Johnson said.

He says a church employee went to check out Hungry Hearts.

"He came back saying how incredible it was. How he recognized some of the folks who come to our meals who also went to their lunches. And so it seemed like the perfect match," Johnson said.

While the church and her program work well, Davis doesn't want it to be permanent.

"We will be here for a while. But we are praying for a place of our own," Davis said.

But for now, a lunch sheltered from these harsh summers till the cold winters will stay accessible.

"I get so many hugs and so many thank yous," Davis said. "It's so well worth it."

The free meals are served every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 11 a.m. til 12:30 p.m. at First Christian Church on Southwest D Avenue in Lawton.
