MEDICINE PARK, OK (KSWO)-The road heading up Mount Scott is now closed to all travelers after refuge officials found a hole in the road. It started out small but has since grown much larger prompting the need for repair.

"It's just really unsafe to have any type of traffic," said Quinton Smith, Park Ranger. "Whether it's vehicle or bikers or runners-up there on that road until we get it fixed."

Smith said maintenance workers have been working on the area since Monday morning.

They've had to turn away many visitors after noticing the significant hole in the pavement.

"I guess the rain waters overtime washed out a really bad spot under the road," said Smith.

The hole is about eight feet wide and is halfway up the mountain on the downhill lane. Smith said that it may not be the only problem area they have.

"After seeing this we do realize there are probably some other issues we do need to look at, some other places," he said. "But right now, this is the one we are concentrating on."

He said over the next few days workers will be looking around the entire area for additional problems and reminds visitors to not travel on the road.

"We're hurrying and getting it done as fast as we can, but we're not going to push the timeline to make it unsafe for anyone," said Smith.

Again, there's no word yet on how long the road repairs will take, but you can count on 7 news to keep you updated as more information develops.
