Oklahoma AG urges passage of immigration bill, House Democrats debate against measure

OKLAHOMA CITY (KSWO) - Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond slammed the Biden Administration’s handling of the southern border while simultaneously praising the state House for passing a bill aimed at illegal immigration.
Drummond’s office said he requested the measure, which will allow state authorities to arrest illegal immigrants, saying it will assist in his efforts to crack down on the state’s illegal marijuana grows often run by foreign nationals.
Under the bill, convictions include one year in county jail for a first offense, or two years in prison for further offenses, and the offenders would have to leave the state within three days following their release from custody.
In a press release sent to 7News, Drummond says the House took a stand today for safety in Oklahoma.
“The Oklahoma House of Representatives has taken a strong stand today in favor of public safety. President Biden’s blatant refusal to follow federal law and his complete failure to secure the border are forcing states to take action,” Drummond said. “I am grateful to Speaker McCall and President Pro Tempore Treat for authoring HB 4156, and I look forward to the measure becoming law.”
House Democrats debated against the measure, while providing alternative solutions to the chamber.
Rep. Annie Menz (D-Norman) says this bill would add even more stress to the police forces across the state, while also negatively impacting the state’s workforce and economy.
“Police in Oklahoma are already stretched thin, and this bill would put more on their shoulders without providing any additional funding or tools for them.” Menz said. “This bill is expensive, unenforceable, and encourages people to leave the State of Oklahoma, which would have drastic effects on our workforce and economy. It will also certainly be challenged in the courts which will take money out of the pockets of all Oklahomans. No one is rejecting the idea that there are challenges at our southern border, but there are better solutions to address immigration.
Menz along with Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval (D-OKC) filed amendments to the measure, but did not receive approval.
House Bill 4156 now heads to the state Senate.
