WESTMORELAND, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) - A Tennessee teacher is receiving international recognition for her dedication to education.

Westmoreland High School announced Friday that longtime educator Glenda Akin was honored with the Guinness World Record for having the longest career as a female teacher at the same school.

School officials shared that Akin has worked at the Sumner County school for more than six decades.

“Ms. Akin’s lifelong commitment to education has shaped generations of students and left an unforgettable legacy in our school and community,” officials said. “Please join us in congratulating Ms. Glenda Akin on this historic and well-deserved honor!”

Akin broke the record on Sept. 13, when she reached 61 years and 43 days at the high school.

Photos from Westmoreland High show that the school library has also been named after Akin, with a plaque in her honor placed on a wall.

“Her six decades of service to our school and community will remain forever cherished,” the plaque reads.

Akin thanked everyone involved in helping her receive the well-deserved recognition.
