TULLAHOMA, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) - A child was hit and killed by a dump truck on his way to school Tuesday morning.

Tennessee Highway Patrol said the child was pronounced dead at the scene, which is just blocks away from Robert E. Lee Elementary School and East Middle School.

Tullahoma City Schools said the child was hit while on the way to one of the district’s schools, although officials did not say which campus.

“We are heartbroken to confirm that one of our students was killed in a horrific accident this morning on his way to school. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, classmates, and those who knew and cared for the student,” Tullahoma City Schools said.

Tullahoma Police confirmed that they responded to the scene, but said they will not be releasing any details “out of respect for the family and ongoing investigation.”

Tullahoma Police Department said Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.

“At this time, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no further details are available,” Tennessee Highway Patrol said.
